WILDLIFE WONDERS...AND BLUNDERS...
WILDLIFE BEING SHOT
Wildlife covers a whole host of diverse creatures which range from the wonderfully graceful Eagle to the croaky toad; from the shy striped faced badger to the inquisitive spikey hedgehog and all, for one reason or another, are being threatened by people.
Sadly, the incidence of wildlife being shot by air rifles and the like are on the increase and even protected and endangered species are being targeted. Eagles, owls, badgers and buzzards...all become moving targets and fair game for these shooters. No animal is exempt!
Please be aware that some forms of shooting certain species of wildlife and feral cats is legal. Gamekeepers are one such example where they are allowed to shoot certain animals - although certainly not those that are protected and/or endangered such as those referenced above. Farmers are also allowed to shoot certain species of animal, even a pet dog, if it is perceived as being a threat.
However, should you see anyone shooting at animals and are unsure of the legality of the shoot please report the incident immediately to the police. It could be illegal!
Give a good description of the person and, if a vehicle is being used, jot down the registration number. Take photographs of the incident.
Under no circumstances should you tackle the shooter yourself - just collect evidence and report. Ask other people to do the same, and please be vigilant! Above all, be safe!
CONSTRUCTION WORK
People are also endangering wildlife by destroying their habitat and displacing the animal. Our incessant need to build increasingly more roads, houses and commercial developments threaten species like the hedgehog.
Families are split up and navigation routes become 'no go areas' by our construction work and often food sources are suddenly cut off to the animal.
We block up rivers and streams and this in turn means that animals, such as the now rare otter, maybe unable to come and go as it once used to.
CLIMATE CHANGE
Erratic weather conditions have changed forever both habitats and ecosystems with devastating consequences. With ever increasing warmer winters and hotter summers much of our indigenous wildlife is suffering to such an extent that their very being is being threatened.
The hedgehog, which has been on this planet for over 15 million years, is now on both the endangered species and the protected lists and is being pushed to very edge of extinction.
The whole world just needs to step back and take a good look at what we are continually doing to our planet - our home - and say enough is enough!
CHEMICALS AND PESTICIDES
Our increased used of chemicals and pesticides poison our wildlife and in some cases, such as the bee, are making their numbers so low that they could become extinct very soon. The past 50 years has seen bee numbers decline by an amazing 50%! The number of wild flower meadows have reduced by over 90% over the same period.
GARDENING
We no longer seem to like the country garden look which encourages wildlife in all its and all its glory. Instead the suburban garden is preferred with closely mown lawns and carefully manicured hedges and borders. Everything has a place and everything is in its place! This is a very baron land for wildlife who love untidy places with weeds!
A weed is only a flower that some people think is in the wrong place...I love them!
RUBBISH
The way in which we deal with our rubbish can have a huge impact on our wildlife and it is so easy to tweak and make safe. We only need to change our rubbish habits a little to make a massive improvement to our wildlife...read the following pages!
